The router is only one part of broadband

Separate the incoming connection from the Wi-Fi inside the property.

Identify the access method

A fixed connection reaches the property through a wired network. Mobile broadband reaches a router through radio access. Wi-Fi distributes the connection around the home. A weak Wi-Fi signal can occur even when the internet service into the router is healthy.

Test the task, not the headline

Try uploads, video meetings and several devices together at the times they will be used. A quick download beside the router is an incomplete household test. Where supported, a wired test can help distinguish a local Wi-Fi problem from the incoming connection.

Check equipment obligations

Find out who owns the router, when it must be returned and what support covers. For mobile broadband, test permitted router positions and ventilation. Check any data or allowed-use restrictions before relying on it as the sole household connection.

Consider continuity

Work software, remote access and other specialist tasks can have requirements that a basic browsing test will not expose. Ask the provider before committing. Keep a practical alternative for essential communication during an outage or power interruption.
